Children’s Books

Darren has developed these children’s books as part of a broader effort to raise awareness of the environmental and cultural heritage challenges facing the Çeşme and Alaçatı region of Türkiye. While they are told as gentle, illustrated stories for children, their purpose is deeply rooted in local activism and education.

The first book, Deniz & the Talking Bird, focuses on the Alaçatı Wetland, a relatively small area of extraordinary natural beauty and ecological importance that is now under threat from ongoing urban and port development, illegal dumping, and habitat loss. The book aims to inspire local families, particularly those in Çeşme and Alaçatı, to recognise this fragile environment as something worth protecting, rather than paving over.

The second book, The Wise Fountain of Çeşme, was conceived to draw attention to the cultural and historical heritage of the town, much of which is at risk of disappearing. As this story was being written, the historic Aya Yorgi Monastery was under threat of being demolished, and many of the once-proud Fountains of Çeşme, the very origin of the town’s name, have either been removed, neglected, or left to decay. The story calls for awareness, preservation, and civic pride in these irreplaceable architectural and historical treasures.

Together, these bilingual picture books (in Turkish and English) are designed to engage both children and adults, encouraging them to appreciate their surroundings, understand what is being lost, and participate in the effort to protect it. Each book combines storytelling, environmental education, and cultural preservation, designed to make awareness accessible, emotional, and lasting.

Children’s Books

These books are currently under development, working closely with Çeşme Municipality:

Deniz & the Talking Bird (Deniz ve Konuşan Kuş)

Set in the wetlands of Alaçatı, Deniz & the Talking Bird follows a young schoolgirl, Deniz, who meets a talking black-winged stilt named Kara. Guided by Kara, she discovers the Alaçatı Wetland—a magical place alive with flamingos, herons, and other migratory birds that have visited for centuries. As Kara reveals the wonders of this world, he also shows Deniz the harm caused by rubbish dumping, pollution, and the threat of overdevelopment around the port.

The story is designed for children aged 6–9, blending imagination with real environmental concerns. It encourages respect for nature and local wildlife, helping young readers understand why the wetland must be preserved for future generations.

The Wise Fountain of Çeşme (Çeşme’nin Bilge Çeşmesi)

In The Wise Fountain of Çeşme, a young boy named Ahmed discovers an ancient fountain that can speak. The wise old fountain tells Ahmed stories of Çeşme that reach back thousands of years, of the first settlers of Bağlararası around 3000 B.C., of the ancient volcano and the great Santorini tsunami that reshaped the coastline around 1600 B.C., and of the early Christian monastery of Aya Yorgi built in the 5th century A.D.

It speaks of sailors, travellers, and empires that came and went, and of the Ottoman fountains that later gave Çeşme its name and its soul. Through these memories, Ahmed begins to understand that water has always been the heart of the town, flowing through its history like a living thread, and that the duty to keep these sources clean and cherished now belongs to his generation.

Through Ahmed’s eyes, readers learn about the loss of cultural memory, as exemplified by the demolition of historic sites like the Aya Yorgi Monastery and the neglect of the fountains that gave Çeşme its name. The story urges readers, both young and old, to look again at their surroundings and realise that heritage, once lost, cannot be rebuilt.
