I wrote The Universal Birthday Song for my daughter — a song of gratitude, hope, and celebration. As I drafted the poem, it grew into something broader, and my aim became to create a truly universal piece that anyone could sing or share. Its verses are written to cross divides of age, gender, and culture, offering a way to mark any birthday with sincerity and joy. Whether read aloud, set to music, or shared in writing, it is intended as an open gift1 — an alternative to the traditional “Happy Birthday to You” — for family, friends, and every life worth celebrating.
Audio PoemYour day returns, another year,
The moment made for you is here.
May every voice remember you,
For all you are, and all you do.
This is your birthday, your story, your song,
Here’s to your life, to all you have done,
Raise a cheer — to the years to come,
The world got better the day [Name] was born.
Life goes on, the seasons change,
Your bright spirit stays the same.
The time you give, the things you share,
Remind us all how much you care.
This is your birthday, your story, your song,
Here’s to your life, to all you have done,
Raise a cheer — to the years to come,
The world got better the day [Name] was born.
Each day ahead is yours to learn,
To find your way at each new turn.
May quiet strength be at your side,
And gentle purpose be your guide.
This is your birthday, your story, your song,
Here’s to your life, to all you have done,
Raise a cheer — to the years to come,
The world got better the day [Name] was born.
Blow out your candles, make your wish,
The cake is sweet, your smile’s pure bliss.
Celebrate, laugh, dance, and sing along —
To you, I/we dedicate this birthday song.
This is your birthday, your story, your song,
Here’s to your life, to all you have done,
Raise a cheer — to the years to come,
The world got better the day [Name] was born.
